  1. Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves?
  2. Mention three advantages of having a good pronunciation.
  3. Mention three disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation.
  4. Explain Elision, coalescence, and assimilation with different examples from the ones on the book.

Remember that opinions can not be exactly the same.

  1. 1. Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves?
Some of the students are capable to learn from themselves and be more exigent with their own learning and they go away to next levels from their own initiation. But, there are others that need to be pushed by the teacher because other way they don’t try to persevere by themselves.

    2. Mention three advantages of having a good pronunciation.
    - Transmit what (s)he want to say in an effective way.
    - Avoid misunderstandings.
    - Improve their speaking skills.

    3. Mention three disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation.
    - Impede quickly communication.
    - Create misunderstandings.
    - Reduce self-confidence in the moment to have a conversation.

    4. Explain Elision, coalescence, and assimilation with different examples from the ones on the book.
Elision: is the omission of sounds, syllables or words in speech.
    Examples:

    • Ne'er-never
    • Gonna-going to
    • Wanna-want to
    • Can't-cannot
    • O'er-over
    • 'tis-it is

Coalescence: Coalescence is a special kind of assimilation.
    Examples:

Assimilation: is the influence of a sound on a neighboring sound so that the two become similar or the same.
    Examples:
    • cheese shop
    • rose show
    • these sheep

  2. 1_ The pronunciation can be corrected or improved by the teacher, but it is the student who has to proposed development at the highest level.
2_ -Gain confidence in yourself . - Better understanding of the nuances of the English language . – Clear communication to others.
3_ - Difficult the communication. . - students will not want to participate in class . – Makes the understanding more complicated.
4_ Elision: is the removal of an unstressed syllable, consonants, or letters from a word or phrase.
Example: - Did you see him last night – Did you see ´im las´nigh´ . – Is not – Isn´t
Coalescence: is a special kind of assimilation. The union of diverse things into one body or form or group; the growing together of parts.
Assimilation: change of a sound in speech so that it becomes identical with or similar to a neighboring sound.
Example: the Latin prefix in- 'not, non-, un-' appears in English as il-, im-. and ir- in the words illegal, immoral, impossible (both m and p are bilabial consonants), and irresponsible as well as the unassimilated original form in- in indecent and incompetent.

  3. 1)Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves?
I believe pronunciation teaching is very important, but in ESL courses around the country I have noticed that pronunciation is the aspect of English that receives least attention. The question, then, is not whether to teach pronunciation, but how to teach pronunciation.
Some people may be exceptional at being able to pick up pronunciation by themselves but eventually even they will need some help recognizing some pronunciation features.

2)Mention three advantages of having a good pronunciation.
•Being able to communicate well with people from diverse countries
•Good pronunciation provides a variety of opportunities
    •Gain confidence in yourself

3)Mention three disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation.
    •Can cause misunderstandings
•It can give a negative impression
    •It can lower one’s confidence

4)Explain Elision, coalescence, and assimilation with different examples from the ones on the book.
•Elision: is the omission of sounds, syllables, or phrases.
Example: laboratory: /ˈlæbrətɔri/ in American English the “o” is omitted.
“comfortable” in some pronunciations the letters in yellow seem to disappear.
•Coalescence: two neighboring sounds merge into a single sound that has properties of each of the original sounds.
    Example: Could you help me?
    I came here last year.
•Assimilation: is a process by which one sound becomes more like a nearby sound. This can occur either within a word or between words.
Example: “handbag” the /d/ sound becomes more like its neighbor /n/
“don’t be silly” where the /n/ and /t/ are assimilated to /m/ by the following
/b/, in many accents the natural sound is “dombe silly”

  4. 1. In my opinion is important to teach pronunciation because they have to know the stressed part of a word because affects its meaning and also the intonation is important for them to know if it goes up or down so they can be comprehended when they communicate with others. You can let students pick up by themselves and indirectly correct them when they mispronounce or mispelled a word.

    2. - They can communicate without difficulties and be understood.
    - -Gain self confidence.
    - It will be more easy to express themselves.

    3. - They will not have self confidence to communicate with others.
    - It will be difficult to others to understand to them.
    - If they don't practice their fluency in speaking will be slow.

    4. Elision: is the removal of an unstressed syllable consonants or letter from a word or phrase.
Example: I am going to the pool. I'm gonna go to the pool.

Coalescence: is a special kind of assimilation.
Example: Did you know her name?

Assimilation: is a term referring to another part of the adaptation process.
Example: A chef learning a new cooking technique.

  5. 1. Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves?
It is important to teach pronunciation, it’s depending of the point of view we should teach pronunciation; every learner is different, some students need to be pushed and other just to improve their pronunciation. But the purpose is just to help the learner to improve their pronunciation skill, they need to force themselves to obtain a highest level in this skill.
    2. Mention three advantages of having a good pronunciation.
    • The comprehension is better.
    • Confidence to share ideas, by improve their speaking skill.
    • Good pronunciation give the opportunity to obtain a specific information.

    3. Mention three disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation.
    • Misunderstanding occur between the listener and the speaker.
    • The learner does not feel comfortable to speak, they feel scare about their pronunciation.
    • Poor pronunciation could require to more information about what they want to know.

    4. Explain Elision, coalescence, and assimilation with different examples from the ones on the book.
    • Elision: is the omission of a specific sound.
    For example: I cannot swim.
    I can’t swim.

    • Coalescence also call fusion: is a special kind of assimilation, it is the fusion of two different sounds.
For example: Could you help me?
    • Assimilation: occurs when two sounds, the final sound of a word with the first sound of the next word also can occur inside of a word, are join and change the sounds creating a new sound.
For example: This is the right place to a sofa.

  6. Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves ?
Yes , we should . In that way the communicative process will occur fast .
3 advantages of having good pronunciation :
    - students grow in cofidence
    -communicate effectively their thoughts
    - Interaction with people from other regions
3 disadvantages of poor pronunciation :
    -Students don't feel confident
    - Communication occurs but with misunderstanding
    -Poor participation from students
Elision : omision of a letter
    Have no - haven't
    Can not - can't
Coalescence : to unite into a whole (fuse)
Assimilation: process by which a speech sounds similar or identical to a neighboring sound
    I can go
    You and me

  7. In my opinion tearehers are the uncharged to develop pronunciation in students, the more students are exposed to the language the more accirate the pronunciation will be
    Advantages:
Good pronunciation help communication in order to negotiate, or just to interact in English
    Self confidence
    Message can also be clear
    Many opportunities to success
    Disadvantages:
    Misunderstanding from listener
    Impede communication
    Reduce self confidence
Define elosion: is the omission of sounds for example most of the contractiond.
Coalescence: or fusion is a special kind of assimilation for example could you help me please?
Asdimilation: occurs when a sound becomes more like a nearby sound for example wanna- want to or gotta got- to

  8. 1. Actually, some of the basis for a good learning process, is pronunciation, if a student develops a good pronunciation, he/she will succeed at the time of transmitting a message to his listeners.. We as teachers have to be very accurate when pronouncing a word, because the way we pronounce a word, is the same way our students will learn it..  If we want our students to succeed in real world speaking situations, we have to teach them how to pronounce the best we can.
Sometimes students learn by themselves this kind of things, but it is always better if they have a guideline to follow

    2.
-Better communication process takes place whenever we speak
-Never get misunderstood for mispronounced words
    -More confidence is gained

    3.
    -Few job opportunities
    -Always being misunderstood
-self-confidence problems at the speaking time

    4. Elision: it is when we pronounce a word but we do not pronounce every sound in it
    amorous - am’rous
    even - ev’n
    unexplored - unexplor’d

Coalescense: when we came with just one sound where there were two different sounds, it is kind of similar to assimilation
    Family - [famli]
    Telephone - [telfon]
    Separate - [sepreit]

Assimilation: when we have two sounds and we make them both sound like one
    In the - [ina]
    In the house -[ina haus]

Off course students have be interested to learn as well.
    Advantage:
    The message will clear shared
Self confiden and more opportunities to success in life
    Disadvantages:
    Impede communication
    Less self confidence
Less opportunities to success in life

  12. 1. My belief is that we should plan our lessons as we normally do. While developing our lesson with students, we need to look for ways of reinforcing correct pronunciation with students not noticing they have been corrected when they make a mistake. Is the same technique we use when students say a phrase that doesn’t have verb agreement like …. Hi mrs. Villatoro yesterday I didn’t came…. (Instead of saying INCORRECT, you just model back spontaneously) oh so didn’t come yesterday…. ( some students will take a while and others will catch it quickly)
So, I believe this technique can be used with pronunciation. Students already have spelling and phonics class to learn about sounds, plus having good pronunciation is not what communicative competence is all about. It is just a slice of the whole cake.

    2.
    a. You communicate your message efficiently

    b. it´s easier to understand the pronunciation of others.

    c. your listening ability improves.

    3.
    a. You burden the person you talk to (they have to guess or contextualize what you say)

    b. You become more self-conscious while speaking.

    c. You set unrealistic goals. (goals that are set only in your mind, since there’s no such thing as perfect English, even native speakers mispronounce words at times…)

    4.
    a. elision is the omission of a sound
From Iced Tea to Ice Tea
From Iced Cream to Ice Cream

    b. coalescence generally happens in forms of the pronoun you, such as in:
    would you
    could you
    should you
did you or he/she knows your name.

    c. assimilation is a common phonological process by which the sound of the ending of one word blends into the sound of the beginning of the following word.

    / t / changes to / p / before / m / / b / or / p /

    basket maker
    best man
    cat burglar
    cigarette paper

    / d / changes to / b / before / m / / b / or / p /

    bad pain
    blood bank
    blood bath
    blood brother

  13. As teachers we are responsible for our student’s needs. In the specific case about English teaching, the pronunciation is needed in the language learning. Of course a learner is expecting to learn pronunciation and we as teachers must be facilitators for that skill. In the other hand we can motivate our students to continue learning pronunciation outside the class. There are many activities that a learner can practice based on his/her intrinsic needs or desires, such as learning through a song, movies or motivated by social activities with native speakers, etc.
    Advantages:
    A clear understanding by others.
Student gain confidence to actively communicate.
    More or better job opportunities.

    Disadvantages:
Learner frustration when they perceive their pronunciation is poor.
Miss communication when talking to others.
It can interfere with some job opportunities.
    ted when can

Elision examples can be clearly stated on words such as:Gonna-going to

    Wanna-want to

    Can't-cannot

    Coalescence:
Donald Gould (unite the sounds into a whole)

    Assimilation
his shoe (Change of a sound in speech)

  14. 1. Should we teach pronunciation or leave our students to pick it up for themselves?
Pronunciation is a skill that the student with the practice will develop, the more input he receives, the more accurate will be the speaking and of course the pronunciation. I believe that teachers must have a good pronunciation and in this way provide the students with the phonetic tools needed to develop this correct pronunciation in order to be able to give clear information. But this depends mostly in the student’s abilities and commitment with his learning.

    2. Mention three advantages of having a good pronunciation.
    a. Be able to give clear information.
    b. Feeling comfortable about yourself.
    c. Communicate effectively.

    3. Mention three disadvantages of having a poor pronunciation.
    a. Cannot communicate with others.
    b. Misunderstandings occur.
    c. Feelings of low self-steam and frustration because you cannot express yourself.

    4. Explain Elision, coalescence, and assimilation with different examples from the ones on the book.
